Storyville - Defying the Cutting Season

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been illegal in Tanzania since 1998. But every year thousands of families still plan to have their daughters cut, an ordeal that could cost them their lives. The ‘Cutting Season’ takes place during the December school holidays.

During this time hundreds of girls are saved from FGM by the police, the government and the work of the Safe House. It is run by Rhobi Samwelly, who was herself a victim of FGM, and now, not only does she valiantly run the safe house but she also works with the local police to rescue and protect girls at risk while arresting the parents and cutters.

But they have a tough and dangerous job and old customs die hard. Men believe that girls must be cut to reduce promiscuity and cut girls command twice the bride price in cows as uncut girls. Girls like Rosie, just 12 years old, have had to make the most difficult choices of their young lives - run away from home, not knowing if they will ever see their families again, or submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage.

These brave and courageous young girls are fighting against a tradition that goes back thousands of years. They are standing up for their human rights and fighting for change in their community.

The Safe House is the one safe place they can escape to.

HISTORY

holy shit!

can someone explain this to me

Thirty years ago a legendary ET game came to fruition, so awful that as the tale told, all unsold copies of it were buried in a pit in New Mexico. A documentary film crew has just unearthed the stash, proving the legend true.

I don’t think people fully grasp just how awful it was. This one game, by the sheer merit of its unmatched shittiness, destroyed the video game and console market so thoroughly that the at home video game nearly went the way of the 8-track player.

It was literally so awful that it nearly changed the entire course of technology.

how can a video game possibly be that bad

People don’t really understand why it was terrible though, and the reasons why are extremely important and relevant especially today.

The game itself is bad, yes. It was built up to be an exciting hit for kids to play at Christmas in 1982. So much in fact, that retailers bought WAY more stock then could every be sold based on the hype.

However, people at the time liked the game. It looks bad now, but the game itself was pretty on par with the times. It wound up selling 1.5 million copies. Which would be great, except Atari was expecting to sell 4-5 million.

While initial reception was positive, critics started panning the game as critics do. While it was no worse than most other games at the time, it was stil frustrating and hard to play. It could not live up to the hype that had been built and negative press built up quickly.

But what was ALSO happening was a flood of cheap imitations on the market. ET is a licensed game, and like all licenses comes at a higher markup. So if you wanted to buy a game for yourself or your kid, would you buy 1 game, or 2 for the same price?

Atari was also screwing around with how they handled their distributors. Just before the game went to public, but AFTER the game had been bought and shipped, Atari announced that they were cancelling every existing contract with distributors and signing with only a select few.

So distributors, now pissed off and with an abundance of games that were NOT selling and with prices slashed horribly to sell games that people were quickly losing interest in, retailers put their claims to return a collective 2.5-3.5 million copies back to Atari. Atari, unable to recycle the cartridges or resell them in any way, wound up burying them in the Nevada desert.

This caused the Video Game Crash of the early 80s that put a dark mark on video games until Nintendo (and in some small part other game companies) to revive later.

It was the perfect storm. An over-hyped overpriced game sold to an increasingly frustrated and over-saturated market with retailers scrambling to make a dime while Game Devs blame the market for poor sales.

Some say the proverbial planets are aligning again, with way too many consoles putting way too samey games on the market at way too high a cost with a strong dependence on Pre-orders and pre-order exclusives.

Wanna give the game a shot?  Internet Archives actually has a copy of it at this link:

https://archive.org/details/E.T._The_Extra-Terrestrial_1982_Atari_NTSC

this is like the dutch tulip bubble of our times

Yeah I actually have a copy, and my husband can beat it AND explain it. It’s nuts.

deep-blue-jeer:

“fat person trying to catch their breath after physical activity” is not a funny joke. Its not a joke at all in fact. Its just something that happens. Laughing at that is really awful. You make us ashamed of things we cant control. I shouldnt have to sit there slowly suffocating myself trying to hold in heavy breathing after running or something just because of the stigma society places on me for it. Its already an uncomfortable feeling to be panting for breath and guess what fat people have to deal with that more often than skinny people do. Dont fucking make it worse by making us have to try and hide it. Stop the fucking stigma surrounding fat people panting.

A lot of fat people would love to have better cardiovascular fitness and would totally be physically able to attain it, except that gyms, parks and even the sidewalk are hostile environments for fat people. When I was training hard I could run up a flight of stairs and catch my breath in a few seconds, but I was still fat as fuck.

But this didn’t happen until I was 23 because NO ONE EVER TOLD ME IT’S POSSIBLE TO BE FAT AND FIT. I had no idea I could do all this fun stuff like bicycling and hiking and running without first losing weight so I put it off until that magical day when I would be thin (spoiler: didn’t happen). I bet this is a major barrier for a lot of fat people.

Another barrier was that I had a hell of a time getting medical care for injuries and joint problems that were NOT weight related because everywhere I turned I got ‘lose weight’ instead of actual treatment, so that made it hard to keep up my fitness pursuits safely.

Here’s a disclaimer though: you don’t have to be cardio-fit (or even want to be fit) to be worthy of respect, dignity and admiration as a fat person. I am not trying to uphold the ‘good fatty’ myth. BUT cardio fitness is a useful and enjoyable thing that a lot of us fat people lose access to SOLELY because of fatphobia.

I also want to give a shoutout to people for whom high cardio fitness is not possible due to disability, chronic illness or poverty. It is a privelige to be able to pursue cardio fitness and I’m really glad I can.

I never really lost weight as a runner, I just got to the point where I could run a half marathon without dying. I could catch my breath easier and run ten minute miles. It was awesome and I miss it (I’m pregnant rn), so as soon as I can I’ll get back to it. But it means running less than a minute at a time and doing 16 minute miles and whittling it back down over time. It’s not easy but running is something you can definitely see consistent improvement in. So do your best to ignore the douchebags that pick on you for trying. You can do it, and so can I, and I’ll go do my third half marathon next year.

okay this is possibly bonkers advice but I’ve found that writing a cover letter is so easy if you just like. briefly inhabit the persona of a high elf who thinks they’re hot shit and cannot imagine why any of their previous work experience would be anything less than gobsmackingly impressive. “as you will see in my resume, I have extensive experience with…” “I am ideal for this position because…” “I’ve noticed this thing you do well and here’s how I will help do it even better…” just really go for it you know, just act like you’re already half hired

100% accurate.
